Frequently asked questions

Can I claim if I am waiting to hear about Universal Credit?

Yes. You can claim Funeral Expenses Payment even if you have applied for a qualifying benefit and are still waiting for a decision. Submit your claim before the 6-month deadline.

Does it matter who paid for the funeral?

You need to be the person responsible for arranging the funeral. If you have already paid, DWP pays you. If you have not paid yet, DWP can pay the funeral director directly.

What if the deceased had savings or a life insurance policy?

Money available from the estate can reduce the Funeral Expenses Payment. Life insurance paid directly to a named beneficiary may be treated differently, so check with DWP.

What if I cannot afford the funeral while waiting for the payment?

Speak to the funeral director early. You can claim before the funeral if you have an invoice or signed contract, and some banks may release estate money for funeral costs before probate.
